Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but conditions vary a lot by month. The best time for you depends on whether you prioritise dry weather, quiet trails or clear views.
The best months
The two main climbing seasons are:
- January to early March — generally dry and slightly warmer, with clear mornings. A beautiful time with fewer climbers than August.
- June to October — the long dry season and the most popular period. Expect cold nights, clear skies and busier routes, especially in August.
Month by month
January and February
Warm, mostly dry days, with a chance of snow on the summit. Excellent visibility. A great choice outside the busy summer season.
March
Conditions start to change towards the long rains. Early March can still be good.
April and May
The long rains. Trails are muddy and clouds often cover the views. Few people climb, and some operators do not run climbs. The northern Rongai Route stays drier.
June
The dry season begins. Nights are very cold but skies clear. Trails are quieter than in July and August.
July to September
Peak season: reliable weather, cold temperatures and the busiest trails. Book early.
October
Still dry, with fewer climbers than August. A great month for combining a climb with a safari.
November
The short rains bring afternoon showers. Fewer climbers and greener lower slopes.
December
Variable early in the month, improving towards Christmas, which is a popular holiday period.
Full moon climbs
Many climbers like to time summit night with the full moon, which lights the path and the glaciers. These dates are popular, so book ahead.
Temperatures on the mountain
Kilimanjaro's weather depends more on altitude than on the season. You may start in warm rainforest at around 25°C and face temperatures well below freezing at the summit at night. Every climber needs a full set of warm layers, whatever the month.
Rain, snow and visibility
- In the dry seasons, mornings are usually clear, with clouds building in the afternoon at lower altitudes.
- Snow can fall on the summit at any time of year, especially in the wetter months.
- In the rainy seasons, the forest sections become muddy and slippery.
Booking ahead
For July to September, December to February and full moon dates, we recommend booking several months in advance so we can secure your preferred dates and crew.
