The Best Beaches in Zanzibar (and How to Choose)

Zanzibar has some of the most beautiful beaches in East Africa. But they are not all the same, and the biggest difference is the tide. Understanding this will help you choose the right beach for your holiday.

Tides: the key to choosing

On the east coast, the tide goes out a long way, sometimes for hundreds of metres. At low tide you can walk across the sand and explore rock pools, but swimming is limited for several hours a day. On the north coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, the tides are much smaller, so you can swim at most times of day.

Nungwi

At the northern tip of the island, Nungwi is lively, with restaurants, bars and dive centres. It has spectacular sunsets and is home to traditional dhow builders.

Kendwa

Just south of Nungwi, Kendwa has a long, wide beach with calm water and very little tidal change. It is perfect for swimming and sunset watching.

Matemwe

A quiet stretch of the north-east coast with fine white sand, local fishing villages and easy access to Mnemba Atoll, the best snorkelling spot on the island.

Paje

Paje on the south-east coast is famous for kitesurfing thanks to its shallow lagoon and steady winds. It has a relaxed, sociable atmosphere.

Jambiani

South of Paje, Jambiani is a long, peaceful beach with seaweed farms and a strong local character. Great for travellers who want to slow down.

Michamvi and Pingwe

A peninsula on the east coast with sheltered sunset views over Chwaka Bay. Home to The Rock, the famous restaurant built on a rock in the sea.

Choosing a hotel on the beach

  • Resorts offer pools, multiple restaurants and activities — great for families.
  • Boutique hotels are intimate and stylish — ideal for couples.
  • Private villas give privacy and space for groups and honeymooners.
  • Guesthouses in villages are budget-friendly and authentic.

Beach safety tips

  1. Ask your hotel about tide times each day.
  2. Wear water shoes when walking on reefs and rock pools.
  3. Avoid touching sea urchins and coral.
  4. Swim near your hotel and follow local advice about currents.
  5. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.

Seaweed season

Some east coast beaches have more seaweed at certain times of year, usually during the wetter months. It is natural and part of the local economy, as many women farm seaweed for a living.
