Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unflooded and unbroken volcanic caldera in the world. Its floor, around 260 km² and 600 m below the rim, is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, making it one of the most reliable places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day.
Highlights
- One of the best chances in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino
- Large lion prides, spotted hyenas, elephants and buffalo
- Flamingos on the soda lake of Lake Magadi
- Spectacular views from lodges on the crater rim
Good to know
The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Maasai communities live alongside wildlife. Game drives on the crater floor are limited to around six hours per day, so we usually start early to enjoy the best light and fewer vehicles.
